Is Cam Newton a Pro-Bowler?

Crossposted at The Sports Rocker.

We're nearing the halfway point of the NFL season and early speculation about how well rookie Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton would adapt to the professional ranks has turned to ... does Cam Newton have a chance of making the Pro Bowl?

ESPN's Skip Bayless tweeted this weekend after the QB's win over the Redskins:
I'm not sold on Christian Ponder's poise under fire. But Cam has a chance to make the Pro Bowl THIS YEAR. Even better than I thought. Unreal
A look at the stat shows some merit to this argument. The Panthers are currently in the basement of the NFC South at 2-5 but they're clearly far from the worst team in the NFC (refer to my previous Andrew Luck Sweepstakes post).

The bad: Cam has the tenth best passer rating in the NFC and has given up way too many interceptions.

The good: he's got 15 touchdowns combined (8 passing, 7 rushing), only one less than Brady. He's only one of three NFC QBs averaging at least 300 yards per game. And he's accounted for 15 of the Panthers' 18 TDs. In other words, the Panthers are winning because of him, not in spite of him, which you might expect for a rookie QB.

And most importantly, if not Cam, then who? Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees are the obvious #1/#2 in the NFC. If not Cam at #3, then who? Manning, Romo, Ryan? Would you take any of these three in a draft right now over Cam?

Not me. If I'm voting today, as much as it pains me to agree with Bayless, Cam would be headed to the Pro Bowl. Something I never would have predicted before the season began.
